In August 2014 terrorists overran Mosul, in Northern Iraq. Those that lived through the invasion, left everything and fled. Many of these refugees, mostly women and children, went to Erbil, in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. There the owners of three large homes, made their homes available to the fleeing refugees. Eventually 23 families settled into those three homes. The owners of these homes were modern day Good Samaritans.

Update _ Samaritan's Purse airlifted an emergency field hospital and relief supplies from Greensboro, North Carolina, to Erbil, Iraq, on December 23, 2016. The hospital will treat those injured and traumatized during the battle to liberate Mosul and surrounding areas, which have been controlled by ISIS for more than two years. The hospital is being established in partnership with the Iraqi Ministry of Health.

We may not live where refugees of war are fleeing into our neighborhoods. But many people are refugees from their own private wars: wars between family members or the war against addiction from alcohol, drugs, sex, pornography or debt. Selfishness, hopelessness, covetousness and poverty compound their problems. These people are domestic refugees and they need a friend. We need to be aware of people that are lonely, sad, depressed or stressed out. That includes children and youth, especially in dysfunctional families. We can reach out to these people and be a modern day Good Samaritan. We can share a meal, send a text or a note, or just  brighten someone's day by saying kind uplifting words or inviting them to a church or community social. We help refugees and become Good Samaritans when we reach out to others. Lets do it!

This Good Samaritan volunteers
Rose Springer remembers the day 10 years ago when her deceased husband received a card from GSH asking him to volunteer. After reading the card, Rose thought, “My husband can’t volunteer, but I can.”  “I was in so much pain after my husband passed away,” says Rose. “I walked into Good Sam Hospital and told them I’d like to volunteer in place of my husband. I knew this was the answer to my prayers.”  Volunteering and helping others has helped Rose heal. “What better place to volunteer my time than a hospital where people are hurting? This is the best place for me. I’m a people person, and I love what I do.”  Her first assignment was at the hospital’s information desk, and she’s been there for a decade. Rose enjoys greeting people. Her genuine smile and positive personality helps put visitors at ease. She is known for her kind words, caring attitude, and willingness to listen. “I have been blessed in my life, and after 38 years of teaching elementary school, I just wanted to give back all that has been given to me.”  Rose knows God placed her at GSH. She is grateful for the opportunity to be part of the volunteer family, and she believes in “blooming where I’m planted.”
